Metroid: Other M causing thumb issues? Just make your own Wiimote dpad mod

Looks like someone couldn’t take the small size of the Wiimote dpad while playing Metroid: Other M, so they pieced together a solution that works better for them. While it’s not a perfect fit, I do like the idea of a bigger dpad.

AquaSpace’s biggest selling point was the ability to swim with your Mii character, and it is a shame that that part turned out to be such a disappointment. For just 100 Wii Points less, My Aquarium is a much more enjoyable fish tank simulator. If Paon and Nintendo had managed to work out the problems surrounding the Mii mode, it would have been a little easier to recommend AquaSpace, but in its current state, it is pretty hard to do so.

“Ivy the Kiwi?” tries to do a lot of things to stand apart from its action puzzle brethren, and, for the most part, it succeeds. The game’s simple pointer-based mechanics kept making me think that this title would make a perfect iPhone game, but it’s fleshed out enough to be a worthy budget Wii title. As long as you don’t go into the game looking for a really deep experience, “Ivy the Kiwi?” will offer a fun experience, along with a lot of replay in a beautiful setting.

A portion of an N-Sider2 review…

Ivy the Kiwi? may not be a high profile title, but it’s still a challenging and addictive game with level designs that even experienced gamers can appreciate. Sure, the game is on the extremely short side, but for budget price this is a charming little game with decent replay value.

This comment was made right after talking about TGS. We keep hearing about a rumored Wii entry in the Sakura Wars saga. Could we end up seeing that rumor come true at TGS?

Friday 3rd September 2010: Continuing a bumper year of releases, Rising Star Games has confirmed Eldar Saga’s 2010 release date as 17th September. The game will fill a niche in the current games climate by appealing to Wii owners who are interested in the RPG format.

Gameplay in Eldar Saga kicks off in character creation mode, with five basic classes and numerous advanced classes, skills, weapons and equipment to choose from. Split into two chapters, gamers start as a man and later take on the role of a female.

The first chapter sees gamers charged with retrieving fragments from a meteorite that released hordes of monsters on the land, wreaking havoc. The second chapter takes place 100 years later when the monsters are close to taking over the world. Playing as a descendant of the hero of the first chapter, gamers join an army intent on destroying the monsters.

Battles take place in real time and gamers can quest together via the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection for co-op gameplay at anytime they wish. Jobs also play a big part in the Eldar Saga with the flexible levelling up system allowing the gamer to focus on strengths and weaknesses as they see fit.

“The RPG genre is one of the least represented the Wii and we’re confident Eldar Saga successfully fills a gap in this market, bringing classic story-driven gameplay,” says Martin Defries, managing director, Rising Star Games. “Developer Marvelous Entertainment is renowned for creating immersive gameplay and Eldar Saga is no exception.”

Eldar Saga will be released on 17th September 2010 on the Wii courtesy of Rising Star Games.

A portion of a Nintendo-Okie review…

There are few games I would call indie darlings, this would be one of them. This first retail game by the developer hits nearly everything they were trying to do perfectly. It brings a completely new twist (pardon the pun) to the platform genre, mixes it with a beautifully unique art style and spits out a game that’s well worth the 1,000 Wii Point asking price. One thing that would make this game better? The announcement of new downloadable puzzles.

September 3, 2010 - Industry luminary Warren Spector today revealed Part Two of the Disney Epic Mickey video game opening movie at the conclusion of his keynote address at the Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle, Washington. Concluding the back story for Disney Epic Mickey,Part Two follows Mickey Mouse as he regains consciousness in Wasteland only to find himself trapped in the clutches of The Mad Doctor. Mickey encounters an old foe, meets a new one and encounters his half brother, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, for the first time ever.

Disney Epic Mickeyis an action-adventure platforming game for the Wii console that sends Mickey Mouse on an epic journey of creativity and discovery. As Mickey, the player is propelled into Wasteland, an alternate world made up of Disney’s long forgotten characters and attractions, and is given the power to wield paint and paint thinner to dynamically change the world while determining Mickey’s path to becoming an epic hero.

Through the use of this unique paint and paint thinner, the key components of animation and Mickey’s tools for impacting his world, players will have the ability to shape how the story unfolds as they discover the concept of “Playstyle Matters” – an innovative style of gameplay created by Disney Interactive Studios’ Junction Point, led by industry luminary Warren Spector, where players creatively tackle different challenges in the world to explore all the possibilities and storylines – but with consequences for their chosen actions.

Disney Epic Mickeywill be available this holiday season exclusively for the Wii console.

UTV Ignition says ‘Swarm’ is coming to ‘all platforms via digital download’

The following press release states that Swarm will be out on all platforms via digital download. To me, that would include Wii and DS. While I think the DS is a bit of a stretch, we’ll see if WiiWare is happening or not. Unfortunately, the official FTP to download trailers is currently acting up, so we’ll just have to deal with the PR for now.

UTV Ignition Entertainment Ltd., a global publisher and developer of videogames, along with co-publisher Hothead Games, today released a brand-new trailer and the first-ever gameplay video for Swarm, the award-winning action platformer launching worldwide on all platforms via digital channels in early 2011. The first video gives players a walkthrough of the brutally funny title, guided by Hothead’s Joel DeYoung, while the all-new trailer shows more of the hilarious and exciting ways the lovable yet daft Swarmites can be sacrificed…for the greater good, of course!

In Swarm, players take control of 50 utterly fearless Swarmites and must drive them through an intense, entertaining and often suicidal battle for a greater good. Run, bash, huddle, boost, stack, jump, push and throw your way through gauntlets of death and destruction in an attempt to collect valuable DNA and ensure that at least one Swarmite survives. With a unique combination of mass character control and fast action, the resulting brutal aftermath will make players want to play Swarm over and over again.

Swarm is being developed by Hothead Games and will be available early 2011 on all platforms via digital download.

- the name roughly translates into ‘going through holes’
- take control of a block and spin/rotate the piece to fit through holes
- the background rushes towards you, making you think fast to twist through a hole
- play with either Wiimote or Nunchuk
- move the pieces around with the d-pad, make them rotate with A or B, and accelerate through the wall with Z
- go through special markers in the holes in the wall to get additional points
- build up combos if you keep doing this
- holes are actually bigger than your piece
- possible to use the piece to first draw out a silhouette matching the full hole, which is referred to as a ‘Trick’
- Tricks offer up big points
- continually retry whenever you run into a wall
- time limit
- “Endless” mode allows you to play forever
- “Trick Challenge” mode has you doing Tricks through each hole
- Wi-Fi Connection support for worldwide rankings
- confirmed for overseas release
